Improving the way we operate Ports

With its VTS Innovation lab The Port of Rotterdam and her partners makes the digital transformation of VTS services visible, tangible and realistic. It is a logical next step, simultaneously and in cooperation with a Digital Twin, to further digitize the VTS services in the port. The VTS Innovation Lab fits perfectly in the ambition of the Port Authority to become the safest and smartest port in the world: a premium port where customers achieve the best efficiency and effectiveness in a safe, reliable and sustainable environment. We have defined three main topics to explore:

  • Full object detection and visibility
  • Interacting objects
  • Advanced decision support

On these topic Proof of Concepts (PoC) and pilots are or will be realized within the VTS Innovation Lab. We have created a laboratory setting with the possibility’s to test new concepts in a live and therefore realistic environment

Full detection and visibility

Full detection and visibility of floating object will probably need new type of sensors and more and more sensor fusing. To do so we defined multiple projects to set standards for the future.

  • Solid state radar
  • Lidar
  • CCTV camera’s
  • AI object detection

Interacting objects

To create an ecosystem where objects are able to interact with each other, specific on VTS information, it requires technology and standardization. We defined some PoC to explore the technology and standardization needed and gives insights on the benefits:

  • object information detected by VTS systems, from shore based sensors, plotted on the ECDIS on board of vessels
  • sensor information from ships fused and integrated within the VTS system
  • objects as a sensor talking about there conditions (in combination with Digital Twin PoR)  

Advanced decision support

The aim is to improve the safety in the port and gives  the VTS operator support in such a way that we maintain situational awareness and alertness while the monitoring partly will be done by the system? Advanced decision support services based on human interaction are most likely needed. We start with small steps on projects like

  • route prediction on historical behavior
  • near miss and collision prediction
  • translation support systems
